Making Room for What Truly Matters to You
By Carol Whitaker, Life Coach for Women

An honest conversation about why we put our own dreams on hold, and how to finally start choosing yourself again.
What have you been putting off that your heart longs for? There is probably something you’ve been meaning to do for yourself lately.
Maybe it’s taking that first step toward a goal you’ve carried in your heart for a while. Maybe it’s getting outside in nature, or simply holding twenty minutes after dinner for a quiet walk to clear your head.
You set the intention, and you fully mean to follow through. Then life happens. Someone in the family needs you, your work calendar fills up, and you promise yourself you’ll get to it as soon as things settle down.
Before you know it, weeks turn into months, and you’re making that exact same promise to yourself all over again.
If this feels familiar, I want you to pause right here with me. Don’t be hard on yourself. This isn’t about guilt; it’s a gentle invitation to take a fresh look at why the things that matter so much to you keep getting pushed to the back burner.
Waiting for the “Right Time”
So often, we genuinely want to make a change, but we don’t actually build space for it in our daily lives. We sit back and hope to stumble upon a quiet afternoon, a little extra time, or a stretch of time when everyone else in our life is completely taken care of first.
I completely understand that deep desire to be there for the people you love.
But you can take wonderful care of your family and still hold time for your own spirit. Giving yourself space might require an honest conversation with those around you. It might mean asking for a little help or simply letting someone know you won’t be available for an hour.
Your goals are not selfish, and they aren’t less important than everything else on your list.
Start Small, but Keep the Promise
Instead of asking yourself to overhaul your entire life or finish everything this week, let’s start with just one realistic step.
Pick one thing you’d love to move forward. Look at the week ahead, find a specific window, and lock it in.
- Be gentle and specific. Give yourself 30 minutes to explore an idea, write that email, or make a decision you’ve been mulling over.
- Look ahead for roadblocks. If that time of day usually gets interrupted, pick a better time. If you need support or information, ask for it beforehand.
- Treat yourself with grace. If the week doesn’t go as planned, don’t turn a missed step into a harsh judgment about who you are. Just look at what happened objectively. Was the step too big? Did something urgent pop up? Every answer gives you helpful feedback for next time.
A Simple Question for You
Take a quiet breath and think about this for a moment:
What is one promise to yourself that you are ready to make room for this week?
Choose something you genuinely want to do, not another chore you feel you should add to an already exhausting list. It doesn’t have to be a giant leap. A thoughtful, quiet beginning is more than enough.
By the end of this week, you don’t need to have every detail figured out. But you’ll feel that wonderful shift that comes from giving your own heart more than just a passing thought.
You’ll have taken a real step.
